Islamabad: A meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) began in Astana, capital of Kazakhstan on Tuesday, with the participation of foreign ministers of the SCO member states, and the SCO Secretary-General and Director of the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure Executive Committee.
The major agenda of the meeting is the comprehensive preparations for the upcoming SCO Summit, attended by Heads of States, and to held in Astana on July 3-4, 2024.
The participating foreign minister will discuss preparations for the SCO summit, as well as deliberate on current international and regional topics. In the meeting, particular attention will be paid to the prospects for the further development of the association and its adaptation to the formation of a new world order.
At the meeting, the ministers will consider candidates for the positions of the SCO Secretary-General and the director of the executive committee of the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure. The participants will prepare a package of various documents for approval by the heads of state.
At the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting in Astana, Iran is represented by Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy Mehdi Safari since the country’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian died in a chopper crash on May 19.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will take part in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, which will be held in Astana on July 3-4, Deputy Prime Minister – Head of the Diplomatic Department of Kazakhstan Murat Nurtleu told media at a meeting of the SCO Foreign Ministers’ Council.
“For the first time, a meeting will be held in the SCO+ format with the participation of member states, observers and dialogue partners, as well as the UN Secretary-General,” he said.
President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev held a meeting with the ministers of foreign affairs of SCO member state.
