The summit is themed Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security.

During meetings held in both restricted and expanded formats, the BRICS leaders will exchange views on pressing issues on the global and regional agenda. They will discuss the three main pillars of cooperation identified by the Russian chairmanship: politics and security, the economy and finance, and cultural and humanitarian ties.

Particular attention will be given to the potential expansion of BRICS through the proposed establishment of a new category of ”partner nations.“

Reports will also be delivered by the chairpersons of the New Development Bank, the Business Council, the Interbank Cooperation Mechanism, and the Women’s Business Alliance.

The outcomes of these discussions will be summarised in the Kazan Summit Declaration.

On the final day of the summit, a BRICS Plus/Outreach format meeting will be convened, with representatives from nearly forty countries in attendance. Among them are leaders from the CIS, delegations from numerous Asian, African, Middle Eastern, and Latin American countries, as well as heads of executive bodies from various international organisations.

The agenda includes discussions on pressing international issues, with a particular focus on the escalating situation in the Middle East and interactions between the BRICS countries and the Global South in the interests of sustainable development.

Vladimir Putin will hold bilateral meetings with nearly all the leaders participating in the summit.

Leaders of the Global South Arrive in Kazan for 16th Summit of the BRICS

Leaders of the Global South have gathered in the city of Kazan, Russia, for the 16th Summit of the BRICS, starting from October 22 to 24, 2024, for expanding cooperation and connectivity, in countries of Global South, and for shaping the Multipolar World.

The BRICS is an emerging economic grouping, and was founded by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates became BRICS members on January 1, 2024.

Some 32 countries have confirmed their participation in the meeting, scheduled to be held from Oct 22 to 24. Of them, 24 states will be represented by their heads and eight by their senior officials, said Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov.

The latest country to join the bid for membership of BRICS was Sri Lanka as its Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath announced this month to submit its application at the Kazan summit, according to the Xinhua News Agency on October 14.

The expanding list shows the unique appeal of BRICS for countries across different continents, especially among the Global South countries, and their enthusiasm has been ignited by development opportunities the BRICS can bring as well as the platform’s inclusive and open nature.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will also attend the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia from October 22 to 24, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying announced on Friday.

During the BRICS summit in Russia, Xi will attend events including small-group and large-group talks and BRICS Plus Dialogue and deliver important addresses. He will also have in-depth exchanges with other leaders on the international landscape, the BRICS practical cooperation, the development of BRICS mechanism and important issues of mutual interest, according to Mao Ning, another Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a meeting with representatives of mainstream media outlets from BRICS countries, in Moscow, highlighted the influence of the BRICS cooperation mechanism, noting that the group has expanded to 10 member countries, with 30 more nations expressing interest in collaborating with BRICS or seeking various forms of participation.
