Islamabad: Pakistan and Azerbaijan have agreed to enhance their multilateral cooperation for mutual development including support for Pakistan to tackle climate change emergency.
This was revealed after meeting of Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, who held comprehensive interactions with the top leadership of Pakistan during his official visit to Islamabad from May 30,2024.
He held separate meetings with Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Acting President and Chairman of the Senate of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Deputy Prime Minister of Pakistan, Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar.
Speaking about Climate Change cooperation, Jeyhun Bayramov said hosting the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP) of Azerbaijan has created new opportunities for cooperation in various fields, including green energy.
The Azerbaijan Foreign Minister further added by saying “assuming the presidency of COP29 is a great responsibility and a challenge. He said being a developing county, Azerbaijan very well understands the challenges being faced by all the developing countries”.
He said Azerbaijan will support all the developing countries including Pakistan to tackle issues related to climate change, particularly Pakistan’s need of acquiring early warning system.
During the meetings, both side held discussions covering strategic partnership between Pakistan and Azerbaijan, as well as potential fields of cooperation including economy, trade, investments, energy security, and communications.
In addition to bilateral cooperation, multilateral interaction within the regional and international formats were also discussed.
While meeting with Deputy Prime Minister of Pakistan, Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar , Jeyhun Bayramov appreciated the strategic partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, and emphasized that mutual visits and high-level meetings have given a special boost to further development of relations between the two countries in all spheres.
On bilateral political cooperation, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov thanked Pakistan for the strong political and moral support it provided to Azerbaijan during the occupation of Azerbaijan lands of Armenia, during the 44-day Homeland War, as well as during the post-war period.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also emphasized in the meeting that the principled position of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Jammu and Kashmir is based on the support of the solution peacefully in accordance with the norms and principles of international law and the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council.
Diverse Trade and Investment Cooperation
The importance of comprehensive cooperation between the two countries in the fields of energy, information technologies, pharmaceutical, heavy and light industry, chemistry, agriculture, tourism, transport, defense, education, humanitarian and other areas was emphasized.
Direct Flights Boost Tourism Cooperation
It has been noted that direct flights between the two countries contribute greatly to the development of tourism and human relations.
Cultural Cooperation
The development of cooperation relations in education and humanitarian sphere, the presence of language and cultural centers operating in educational institutions in both countries, and training programs were noted with pleasure.
Ministers noted the importance of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission between Azerbaijan and Pakistan in terms of deepening relations and increasing mutual investments.
In the meeting, the parties noted that Azerbaijan gave great importance to cooperation with Pakistan within the framework of the Consultative on Mutual Action and Trust Measures in Asia.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also provided detailed information about the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the post-conflict recovery and reconstruction works, as well as the threat of mines.
During the meeting, there was also an exchange of views on other bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest.
Ministers had a comprehensive discussion on various topics and shared goals to further enhance the strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Pakistan.
Enhancing cooperation between the higher education institutions
The Azeri Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation between the higher education institutions and cultural centers as well as scientific research institutions and think thanks of the two countries.
