Islamabad: Climate-Compatible Education discussion session will be organized by the Institute of Regional Studies, Islamabad, on Thursday, 12 September 2024, wherein experts and policymakers will highlight the role of education in shaping young minds about climate change and sustainability.

Understanding climate complexities is daunting but it identifying the right knowledge and skills, efficiently incorporating them into daily education is vital to embrace climate change adaptation.
This calls for a tailored learning and teaching projects that hones leaders’ expertise, focusing on sustainable practices.

Pakistan is facing the most devastating climate change crisis. Over 33 million people were affected by the floodwaters in 2022.
According to data, the 2022 floods were made significantly worse by human-caused climate change and the region has been deeply affected by climate change.
Pakistan produces less than 1% of the world’s carbon footprint yet is suffering the biggest consequences of climate change. According to the Global Climate Risk Index, Pakistan is currently the fifth most climate-vulnerable country in the world, having lost nearly ten thousand lives and suffering economic losses worth 3.8 billion USD due to climate change throughout the years 1999 to 2018.
Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Khazar Farhadov, has expressed optimism about the upcoming COP29, which will be hosted in Baku.
Speaking at a pre-COP29 seminar “Strengthening Transboundary Resilience: Enhancing Regional Cooperation”, organized by the Institute of Regional Studies (IRS) in Islamabad, emphasized the importance of global solidarity, the mobilization of international climate finance and the need for an inclusive process, stating that COP29 will be the most “significant international event of 2024.”
Changing seasonal weather patterns, rising temperatures, variability of monsoons and melting of glaciers in the north — compounded with recurrent extreme weather events and natural disasters — are just some of the effects of climate change that Pakistan has been forced to contend with in recent years.
The Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an annual event, with presidency rotating among five UN regions. Azerbaijan’s selection as the host for COP29 is a testament to its growing influence in international affairs and its commitment to addressing climate change.
The choice of Baku Olympic Stadium as the venue underscores Azerbaijan’s experience in hosting large-scale international events.
To ensure a transparent, impartial, and inclusive process, the COP29 Presidency has developed a plan based on two mutually supportive directions: increasing ambitions and catalyzing action.

COP, stands for Conference of Parties, it is the series of formal meetings Conference of Parties, where governments assess global efforts to advance the key Paris Agreement aim of limiting global warming as close as possible to 1.5°C.
At COPs, global leaders come together to identify, measure progress and negotiate the best ways to address climate change crisis the world is facing.
Some 198 Parties (197 countries plus the European Union) have signed to the Convention, and are constituting near universal membership.
COP29 will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November 2024.
COP28 was held in 2023 in UAE.
COP27 was took place on 6 November until 20 November 2022 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
