Kabul: Afghan businesspeople have made as much as $3 billion worth of investment in Iran, said Mahmoud Siadat Head of Iran-Afghanistan Joint Chamber of Commerce, according to statement issued by the Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture on July 13,2024.

More than 50% of the foreign companies registered in Iran belong to the Afghan people, said Mahmoud Siadat.

Siadat cited Khan Jan Alokozay, Deputy head of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI), who claimed that Afghan economic actors have made more than $3 billion of investment in Iran.

He vowed Iran’s support for the Afghan investments which he said would lead to economic prosperity for both Iran and Afghanistan.

In December 2022, Hassan Kazemi Qomi, the Iranian president’s special envoy for Afghanistan, said that Afghan nationals accounted for half of Iran’s foreign investment in the year.

Iran is a suitable market for the export of cotton and minerals from Afghanistan but traders face various barriers and business restrictions at border crossings.

“Iran needs many export items from Afghanistan, including dried fruit, and marble, and the tax is very high. Iran has not given a preferential tariff like Pakistan and China. We want Iran to give preferential tariffs to Afghan businessmen,” said Mohammad Yonis Momand, first deputy of Commerce and Investment.

Afghanistan had a trade volume of $695 million with Iran in the first three months of 2024, said Akhundzada Abdul Salam Jawad, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.

The amount of export and import between Afghanistan and Iran reaches two billion dollars annually and efforts are being made to increase this amount to ten billion dollars, according to Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Afghanistan.
