Beijing: The 14th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF), an event showcasing the rise of Chinese film industry, commenced in Beijing on Thursday, attracting Chinese and foreign filmmakers taking to the red carpet for the opening ceremony that was held at Beijing Yanqi Lake International Convention & Exhibition Center, and attended by more than 200 celebrities.
President of China Media Group (CMG), Shen Haixiong, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony and shared his outlook on the Chinese film industry.
BJIFF 2024 exclusive event was the Tiantan Award that received an impressive 1,509 entries from 118 countries and regions, setting a new record for participation. The submissions covered a wide range of genres and themes, demonstrating the global diversity of cinema.
Of the final 15 selected films, 12 hail from foreign countries while three represent domestic productions. The international jury of the Tiantan Award will deliberate and decide the winners in categories such as Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Artistic Contribution, and others. The winners will be announced at the closing ceremony and awards presentation on April 26.This year, renowned Serbian director Emir Kusturica assumes the role of Jury President, lending his expertise and vision to the festival’s proceedings.
Also, a French film week will be held in Beijing from April 18 to 26 to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France in 2024.
Multiple cinemas across Beijing will screen 30 different French films, including “A Real Job,” which is nominated for this year’s Tiantan Award, showcasing rich themes and diverse styles.
Moreover, the 14th BJIFF will also introduce the inaugural “Film Season for Diplomats,” using film as a medium to promote international dialogue and cultural exchange.
In addition, the festival will debut the “International Guest Lounge,” providing a platform for networking and collaboration between international guests and domestic film industry stakeholders.
BJIFF also brings a variety of engaging activities, including discussions on topics such as the global distribution of Chinese films and the evolving role of domestic cinema productions at international festivals.
BJIFF is being attended by guests from North America, Europe, South America and Japan, and the event promises to spark insightful conversations and pave the way for Chinese cinema’s global rise in today’s dynamic and burgeoning industry landscape.
