Afghanistan to Export Marble to China via Sino-Afghan Railway, Part of BRI


Kabul,Aug. 19: Under the Belt and road cooperation framework, the war-torn Afghanistan is planning to exploit business opprtunities by exporting precious marble stones to China through Sino-Afghan Special Transportation Railway passing from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, said President Ashraf Ghani said Saturday.The first phase of export will include $5 million worth of the semi-precious stone, President added. “I believe that we can export hundreds of millions of dollars marble annually,” the president said speaking at a ceremony to inaugurate cotton industry in western Herat province.

He said that marble for export will be processed in Afghanistan and called for industrial parks in this regard.

The Sino-Afghan Special Transportation Railway was inaugurated last August with first train carrying 84 containers to Afghanistan through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
The president said that the trains were returning empty from Afghanistan.

He also said that the marble export policy will be discussed at the High Economic Council in two weeks.The railway is part of China’s “One Belt, One Road” trade corridor that would cover also Iran.

The president said that the railway with Iran will be inaugurated in coming weeks and the in the first phase, one million tonnes of cement will be imported.

Commenting on cotton in Herat, Ghani said that it was first crop that was cultivated in the province after destruction caused by Changez Khan.

The factory, called Afghan White Gold Cotton Industry, is built by the private sector at the cost $6 million.

With 200 workers, the factory will manufacture six tonnes of textiles per day.
